Uros Floating Islands on lake Titicaca. The Khili are the totora roots which form a natural layer that are one to two meters thick. The Khili is the base of the islands with reeds layed on top to form the walking surface. As the reeds rot, new ones are layed on top. The islands are anchored to the bottom of the lake with ropes attached to the sticks stuck in the island.

There are 42 man made floating islands on Lake Titicaca. There are approx. 2000 Uros People, with the majority of them living on the mainland. Several hundred Uros still live on and maintain the floating islands. The Uros are a pre Inca people and the islands were built and could be moved to other locations when needed for defensive purposes. The islands and boats are made from the Totora reeds.
