Flagstaff hill is where the British put up a flagstaff flying the British Flag after the treaty of 1840 with the Māori . The Government allowed the shipping companies to open the land to homesteaders and the Māori did not receive the rights they felt the treaty allotted them. The version of the treaty, after it was interpreted, to the Māori was different then the English version which caused problems. Putting up a flagstaff and flying the British flag was an insult to the Māori and on July 8, 1844 it was cit down by the Māori . The British put up a second and it was cut down. The third one put up was cut down and the forth one was cut down as well as attacking the guard post and killing all the defenders. They then attacked and burned Kororareka, now known as Russell. This started the Flagstaff War that lasted almost a year.
