Tulum is one of the last Mayan cities inhabited and was built on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Tulum has 16 foot high walls, 26 feet thick, on three sides with a 39 foot cliff on the fourth side. There are five narrow gateways in the wall. Tulum is Mayan for Fence or Wall.

25 feet high Pyramid El Castillo, The Castle, in Tulum, is built on a previous building with the construction taking place in stages. A small shrine was used as a type of light house to bring in trading canoes through the barrier reef.

Temple of the Frescos, in Tulum,  have 13th century frescos on the inside walls. On the outside figurines of the Diving God decorate the façade of the temple along with a relief of the head of the Rain God.
