The original merchants were Butchers. When the Germans retreated in Aug. 1944 this was the only bridge across the Arno River left in tact. Buildings on both ends were destroyed, but was easily cleared by the allies advancing across the Arno.

Streets were paved with stone blocks. There were raised stones at regular intervals used by pedestrians to cross the street when it rained. The streets were also built to be used as gutters running out of the city. Ruts, worn in the rocks  from the wheels of Roman Chariots, can still be viewed in the streets

Emperior Tiverius also resided on the island and ruled his empire from the Island. He would signal his Fleet from the Highest pint of Capri with watch fires that could be seen on the Italian Coast.
