2nd Battalion 9th Marines

When I got to Vietnam I was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. We were stationed in the Northern I Corp, up by the DMZ just down from where Khe Sanh use to be, at Vandegrift Combat Base, LZ Stud. Being a grunt there was some difficulty taking pictures and getting the film processed in a timely manner, many rolls never got processed and those that did may have spent a month or better in my back pack in hot and humid weather. Those that did survive were not of the best quality and after fifty years in albums did sustain some damage, which I was able to fix somewhat.

China Beach

Dewey Canyon lasted 56 days, with us going into Laos. Hotel Co. ambushed a NVA convey on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The 9th Marines captured the largest store of weapons and some 122 Russian Artillery pieces, one of which was dismantled and put in the Museum at Quantico Virginia. At one point, the first part of Feb., we went a week without resupplies, and our units went back to the Firebases and stopped patrols due to lack of supplies. After the operation we ended up going to China Beach for in country R&R . It was at this time I volunteered for the Combined Action Group. The 9th Marines later received the Army Presidential Unit Citation for the operation.
